In an effort to materialize the dream of imparting quality professional education to the masses in a small town of Moodbidri, Alva’s Education Foundation under the leadership and guidance of visionary Dr. M. Mohan Alva, established Alva’s Ayurveda Medical College in the year 1996. The institution is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health sciences, Karnataka, Bangalore and approved by Central Council of Indian Medicine, New Delhi. This 13 years journey is a saga in providing the need of standard medical education in Indian system of Medicine attracting the students from different parts of India and abroad. Initially the strength of students was 60, which in successive years increased and today every year 100 students take admission to a 4 ½ years bachelor medicine and surgery (B.A.M.S) course..
After serving the society through under graduate education for 10 years, this institution achieved another mile stone by the commencement of post graduate course in 2 disciplines namely Dravyaguna Vijnana and Shalya Tantra from the year 2006. In the subsequent years Post graduate course in further four specialities namely Panchakarma, Kaumarabhritya, Ayurveda Sidddhanta and Shareera Rachana were added. This year (2010-11), 5 more specialities were added namely Kayachikitsa, Rasashastra, Bhaishajya Kalpana, Agada Tantra and Prasooti Tantra and Stree Roga.

The power and responsibilities were decentralized for smooth and transparent functioning of the administration. Under this, appointments of H.O.D’s, incharge H.O.D’s, Class Co-ordinators, Research Co-ordinators, Deputy Medical Superintendents, Incharge for Anandamaya Health Resort, College office incharge and Pharmacy incharge were done.
Totally 88 Staff including visiting teaching faculty members ranging from lecturers to professors specialized in different subjects of Ayurveda are rendering highly committed professional teaching for both under graduate and post graduate students. I am very happy and proud say that the teaching faculty of the institution constitutes of highly qualified, experienced, talented and committed to their profession.
The institution is attached with separate OPD and IPD blocks with all specialities and required infrastructure. There are 8 outpatient departments maintained by the faculty members. A good number of patients visit the Ayurveda OPD and utilize the service provided. The College is also attached with Alva’s Health Centre which is 200 bedded hospital offering integrated medical services since 1984. The hospital provides excellent medical facilities by holistic approach. Patients coming here get Ayurvedaand modern treatments from experts in the concerned field along with paramedical facilities like Physiotherapy, Yoga & Naturopathy, Laboratory and Imaging units. The undergraduates, internees and post graduate students get a good amount of exposure by practical training in medical and surgical aspects along with Panchakarma therapies, Ksharasutra therapies, Leech therapy etc. Hundreds of patients including foreigners have got benefits from the special treatments of Ayurveda in our hospital.
The college is also attached to “Alva’s Anandamaya Health Resort”, a 50 bedded treatment centre at Mijar which specializes in providing treatments to life style disorders by incorporating Ayurveda, Physiotherapy, Yoga & Naturopathy therapies by expert doctors.
Medical facility to rural public:
The institution has offered Ayurvedamedical facility to rural public in the form of free medical camps. Periodically free health education and health check-up camps were conducted in nearby schools to create awareness among the general public and made Ayurvedahealth care easily available to general public.
